Creator's Glossary: Key Terms Explained

The world of creative gear is full of technical jargon. We've broken down some of the most important terms into simple, easy-to-understand explanations to help you on your journey.

CRI is a score out of 100 that measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of an object compared to natural sunlight. For video, a CRI of 95+ is considered excellent, ensuring that skin tones and product colors look natural and vibrant, not washed out or discolored.

This refers to the heart-shaped area where a microphone is most sensitive to sound. A cardioid mic primarily picks up sound from directly in front of it, while strongly rejecting sounds from the sides and rear. This is ideal for isolating a single voice and reducing background noise and echo.

Depth of Field describes the range of distance in a photo or video that appears acceptably sharp. A "shallow" DoF means only a small area is in focus, creating that blurry, cinematic background (bokeh). A "deep" DoF means most of the scene, from front to back, is in sharp focus, which is common in landscape photography.
